Weather in Costa Rica

I am not an expertCosta Rica weatherreporter but having been all over the country I am qualified to speak about the climate in Costa Rica’s various regions. Particularly in the southern coastal area a little north of Osa Peninsula. We my wife, my daughter, our dog and me. So let me start there.

With approximately 196 inches of annual rain fall keeping things green and lush the Osa area is beautiful. At higher elevations it is in the 70′s while the coastal areas run into the 80′s and 90′s with bright and sunny days the norm. Near sea level it is hotter than at higher elevations. On the west coast in the north of Costa Rica it is drier and the landscape turns brown part of the year. With an average temperature that is higher than the southern zone it is not easy to escape the heat since the elevation is much lower. clothing for this region should be light and keep you cool in hot weather.

The inland north is rolling hills and volcanoes and much cooler temperatures. Breezes in this area can be strong. In this region of Costa Rica you would be smart to have a jacket. Enjoy a unique experience by visiting a local cloud forest when in this region. Bring warm clothes to this area.

Four million people live in the central valley which sits at approximately 1,000 meters or 3,000 feet. Good weather rules here. 72 degrees is the average day time temperature. Regular rain keeps things green year round.

A lot of the year the east coast is very wet. Weather here is hot and humid and calls for clothes that are appropriate.

Costa Rica’s central southern region has some very high mountains. In this zone of Costa Rica the climate can be very cold at times. Mt. Chirripo is here at 12,000 feet tall. Bring clothes that will keep you warm and a jacket if you have one.
